Passing the schooner Silver Lake, the Pere Marquette enters the channel at Manitowoc Harbor. Powered by a pair of fore and aft compound engines and four coal-fired Scotch boilers, the ferry’s twin screws churned out 2,500 horsepower, capable of pushing the ship at a speed of 12 miles per hour. All Lake Michigan carferries were designed for year-round service. (P82-37-8-117.)

Ann Arbor No. 3 is shown at left departing from its lakefront slip at Manitowoc. Like many other vessel fleets, the Ann Arbor ferries were serviced and refurbished at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding’s yard throughout their history. The yard also built the Ann Arbor Railroad’s flagship Ann Arbor No. 7 in 1925. (P82-37-436.)
